Code of Ethics in this Practice
1. This practice operates according to the principles of Nonmaleficence.
2. All personal information is confidential and will be stored in a safe place according to the POPIA.
3. This practice is a safe place without judgement, labelling or discrimination.
4. We respect the client’s cultural values and believes and will not use any form of manipulation or misuse of power to influence the spiritual or cultural values of the client.
5. The client has the right to be informed of all aspects of the treatment or methods of therapy used during the sessions.
6. The therapist values will not form part of the diagnoses or treatment.
7. The client may request a referral to a different therapist if the need occurs.
8. We seek to build trust and professional relationships with clients. No sexual harassment or personal relationships will be allowed.
9. All people are equal but every individual is unique and will be treated as such.
10. We strive to learn, work, and grow with every client.
11. Therapy sessions are for the clients benefit. At no time will the personal needs of the therapist interfere or clash in anyway with the client’s needs during therapy.
12. Respect is a two-way street and both therapist and client will respect each other. Both client and therapist will respect each other’s personal boundaries.
13. The client will be fully informed of their rights to confidentiality before any therapy occurs.
14. This practice abides by the laws set by the government and only therapy methods sanctioned by the Psychological Society of South Africa or the Health Professions Council of South Africa will be used.
15. All ethical policies as prescribed by the Health Professions Council of South Africa will be followed.
16. Every person has the right to believe in the truth according to their own perceptions.
17. We recognise the client’s autonomy and ability to set their own goals. We shall encourage the client to become self sufficient in managing their own psychological needs without the help of the therapist in a timely manner.
18. The health and wellbeing of the client is our first priority.
19. Data collected during sessions will not be used for personal gain or research without explicit written permission from the client.
20. Every person has the right to be treated in a just and fair manner without prejudice.
21. The therapist will be honest and realistic in the treatment of the client.
22. The therapist will assist all client in achieving their goals and will treat each client with realistic expectations.
23. The therapist reserves the right to intercept the client’s treatment in a situation where harm can occur to the client or any other person identified by the therapist during therapy.
24. The therapist will not make unrealistic promises and will act in an authentic manner during all therapy sessions.
25. Progress will be assessed periodically and therapy methods will be modified accordingly to benefit the client. Periodic reflective sessions will be used to determine the satisfaction of the client with the therapy method and progress made during and after therapy sessions.
